Strong Rides By Josh & Jenson in Scotland

Giant Halifax RT found themselves north of the border last weekend for the Spokes/Limits Kingdom Junior Classic, a tough two-stage race in Fife, north of Edinburgh.

Stage one was a 108km epic of twisting lanes a punchy climbs. The team raced really well with all four riders getting stuck into the key breaks. With still 50km to race, Josh countered a move from Dylan when the bunch brought a break back and his solo attack quickly got up to a minute on the peloton.

Two more riders bridged to Josh after around 10 minutes of chasing and the three were able to gain over 2 mins on the peloton before the final climb of the day. All Josh’s work in initiating the break meant he didn’t have the legs to stay with the climbers up that final climb, but he was able to hold off the main group to get a well-deserved 10th on the stage. Local rider, Alex Dent took the win.

Stage two was another good race for the team with Jenson third in the uphill bunch sprint, taking 5th on the stage in the process. Josh finished in the bunch to take a great 11th overall on GC and second in the points competition.

The plan for the early part of the race was to lead Josh out for the first intermediate sprint which would have put him in virtual green. However a combination of the sprint coming 6km before the distance in the race manual and the race leader’s Spokes team thinking Josh was attacking and so chasing him down, spoilt the plan. In chasing Josh, Spokes gave the green jersey leader a perfect lead out and he just pipped Josh to the line.

Spokes wanted to keep the yellow jersey and so were not letting any threatening breaks go in the early action on the 100km stage . However, eventually two riders got away and Spokes let them have a minute as that didn’t threaten their yellow jersey.

They continued to shut anything else down. The pace was high and the terrain rolling, so it was a reduced bunch of about 30 riders that entered the last kilometre. Jenson surfed the wheels to great effect and kicked on to get a great 5th place, whilst Josh was just behind and had the bonus of a podium visit (see picture, right) for his second in the Points competition. The team also finished third out of ten in the teams’ competition.

Giant Halifax RT now move on to the Monmouth GP in two weeks’ time … and apparently it’s a hilly one !
